What is AI? ๐ค
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. Think of it as a super-fast helper that lives in computers and phones. It can answer questions, create pictures, help with homework, and much more!
But here's the important part: AI is a TOOL, like a calculator or a dictionary. It's really smart in some ways, but it's not actually thinking like you do. It doesn't have feelings, and it can make mistakes!
Where Do You See AI Every Day?
Voice Assistants
Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant use AI to understand what you're asking and give you answers!
Photo Filters
Those funny filters that add puppy ears or change your face? That's AI recognizing faces and adding effects!
Video Games
Characters that respond to you and learn from your playing style use AI to make games more fun!
Recommendations
YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify use AI to suggest videos, shows, and songs you might like!
Chatbots
Tools like ChatGPT can answer questions, help with homework ideas, and even write stories!
Translation
Apps that translate languages use AI to help people from different countries talk to each other!
The 5 C's of AI Safety โญ
These are the 5 golden rules to help you use AI safely and smartly. Remember them and you'll become an AI Safety Expert!
Why this matters: AI can make mistakes! It can give wrong answers, create fake-looking pictures, or even make up information that sounds real but isn't.
Example: If AI told you that penguins live in the North Pole, should you believe it? NO! Penguins actually live in Antarctica (the South Pole). Always double-check important information!
Your Rule: If it matters, check it! Don't trust AI for facts without verifying with a teacher, parent, or reliable source.
Why this matters: Just like you wouldn't give your address to a stranger on the street, you shouldn't share private information with AI tools.
Remember: Never tell AI anything you wouldn't shout in the middle of the cafeteria!
NEVER share:
- Your full name or address
- Your phone number or email
- Your school's name or location
- Any passwords
- Photos of yourself or friends
Your Rule: Keep your private info PRIVATE!
Why this matters: AI can help you with ideas, but YOUR brain should do the thinking and creating. Using AI to do all your work is like having someone else play a video game for you โ you miss out on the fun and learning!
Good ways to use AI:
- โ "Give me 5 ideas for my story about a dragon"
- โ "Help me understand this math problem in a different way"
- โ "What are some interesting facts about space?"
Bad ways to use AI:
- โ "Write my entire book report for me"
- โ "Do my homework while I play games"
- โ "Create my science project without me learning"
Your Rule: Use AI as a helper, not a replacement for your own thinking!
Why this matters: Just because AI said it doesn't make it true! Just because a picture looks real doesn't mean it is! AI can create fake images that look super realistic.
Be an AI Detective! Always ask yourself these 3 questions:
- 1๏ธโฃ Does this make sense?
- 2๏ธโฃ Where did this information come from?
- 3๏ธโฃ Can I verify this somewhere else?
Example: If you see a picture of a unicorn at your school, use your detective skills! That's probably AI-generated and not real.
Your Rule: Question things that seem too weird or too perfect to be true!
Why this matters: AI tools can be really fun and interesting, but they can also be addictive โ kind of like video games or YouTube. They're designed to keep you engaged!
Has this happened to you? You go to ask AI one question and end up chatting with it for an hour? That's the AI doing its job to keep you interested!
Stay balanced! Make sure you're still:
- ๐ Playing outside and being active
- ๐ Reading real books
- ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Talking to friends and family face-to-face
- ๐จ Doing creative things without screens
- ๐ด Getting enough sleep
Your Rule: Set a timer! Use AI for a specific purpose, then log off and live your life!
Test Your AI Safety Skills! ๐ฎ
Click on ONLY the items that should NEVER be shared with AI.
Find all the private information! ๐ต๏ธ
๐ก๏ธ Remember: Never share information that could identify you, your location, or access your accounts!
1. What should you do if AI gives you information for a school project?
2. Which of these is a GOOD way to use AI?
3. You see an amazing photo online. What should you think?
4. How can you avoid spending too much time with AI?
5. What does it mean that AI is a "tool"?
